Ergothioneine in Clinical Practice: The Most Overlooked Nutrient in Longevity and Resilience*

Ergothioneine in Clinical Practice: The Most Overlooked Nutrient in Longevity and Resilience*

Presenter

Lee Caroll Medical Herbalist BSc, BHSc

Ergothioneine (ERGO) is a diet-derived amino-thione concentrated in human tissues via a dedicated transporter (OCTN1/SLC22A4). Despite decades of basic science, ERGO has only recently begun to gain traction in clinical nutrition and longevity education. This webinar positions ERGO as a clinically relevant “redox resilience” nutrient that may help maintain cellular stress physiology in high-demand tissues, with particular relevance to cognition and healthy aging.*

This session reviews a brief history of ERGO discovery and the key chemistry that underpins its thione/thiol adaptive behavior, emphasizing why ERGO should not be considered a generic antioxidant.* We then translate transporter biology into clinical relevance, including tissue distribution patterns (brain, immune, and barrier compartments) and the concept that uptake and retention may increase in normal higher-stress states.

We’ll briefly explain how ERGO may support mitochondrial resilience under stress and influence sulfur-based signaling.* We’ll cover MPST and CSE pathways, and introduce persulfidation as a regulatory layer linking redox balance with metabolic efficiency and cellular endurance. Observational evidence is summarized with clear limitations, followed by a practical review of available human intervention trials, including cognitive and sleep-related outcomes, highlighting what has and has not been demonstrated in humans.*
Finally, a practitioner-ready framework for patient selection will be presented, including dosing for maintenance and short-term higher-dose use, monitoring considerations, and cautious guidance for special populations, including pregnancy and lactation.*
