Power, Performance, and Plants: Integrative Approaches to Improving Exercise Outcomes

Power, Performance, and Plants: Integrative Approaches to Improving Exercise Outcomes
Presenter
Brian Keenan ND, DOM, LAc
This lecture addresses a clinical challenge familiar to every naturopathic physician: helping patients sustain exercise over time. Two distinct but equally important populations are explored: those struggling to initiate exercise due to fatigue, soreness, or poor recovery, and those seeking to enhance performance and resilience through natural means.
For the deconditioned patient, early exercise often provokes excessive fatigue, delayed recovery, and discouragement. This presentation reviews strategies to support energy metabolism, muscular repair, and motivation through botanicals and nutrients that restore physiological efficiency. Attendees will learn how mitochondrial cofactors, such as CoQ10 and Urolithin A, alongside adaptogens like Withania somnifera and Rhodiola rosea, can improve perceived exertion and recovery by modulating HPA axis activity and mitochondrial output. Nutritional and lifestyle approaches to blood sugar regulation, hydration, and protein metabolism will also be integrated.
For the performance-oriented patient, the discussion shifts toward ergogenic botanicals and their ability to optimize oxygen utilization, circulation, and stamina without reliance on stimulants. Evidence for Cordyceps, Panax ginseng, Maca, and Beetroot will be examined in the context of nitric oxide pathways, ATP synthesis, and adaptive resilience.
Throughout, the naturopathic principle of working with, rather than against, the body’s adaptive mechanisms remain central. Clinicians will gain practical frameworks to individualize care supporting both those trying to establish sustainable exercise routines and those aiming to elevate their physical potential through plant-based interventions and nutritional precision.
